Golden Sombrero Standings at the 2/3 Point

Who’s in the lead in the Golden Sombrero standings after seven events?  None other than Redlands TD and co-GS Instigator Bill Maury-Holmes!  Bill’s 163 points after playing in four events give him a ten point lead over multi-time GS Champ A.J. Risley.  But A.J. will not be playing any more Golden Sombrero events this season, as he will be playing at the Gentleman’s Club Challenge in Las Vegas and the Memorial in Scottsdale.  Mark Verrochi could mount a late charge with three events remaining, as he has only played three events so far and is third in the points at 125.  Cory Marstellar is two behind Mark at 123 to round out the top four.

But really, there are a whole bunch of disc golfers who still have a shot at this year’s title.  That’s because the three remaining events:  Wrightwood, Mission Bay and Colina Park could all have large fields, which means big points.  Mission Bay in particular has a history of fielding close to 100 players, so Bill better watch his back!  Wrightwood may also draw a big crowd after players hear the news that all 27 holes will be available for play (barring a huge snowstorm between now and next Saturday).  Remember – your top four point totals count in the standings.

The top ten players so far in the Golden Sombrero standings are:

Overall Standings (after 7 events)
Name Points Events
Bill Maury-Holmes 163 4
A. J. Risley 153 4
Mark Verrochi 125 3
Cory Marsteller 123 4
Francisco Martinez 116 2
Allen Risley 115 4
Eric Audet 105 4
Jone Eide 105 2
Michael Homan 91 2
Steven Rico 78 1

Winners of the events so far:

Redlands:  Cory Marsteller

Prado: Patrick Brickley

Chavez Ridge: Steve Rico

Murrieta: Aaron Cribbes

Sycuan: Tadas Mikuzis

Yucaipa: Cory Marsteller

San Marcos: Mark Verrochi

Team SoCal Wins the California Cup!

Team SoCal - 2015

Team SoCal – 2015

Every January since 1998, the top points leaders in both NorCal Series and SoCal Series meet up in Santa Maria for the CA Cup.  This event was the vision of Tim Selinske and it’s all about having a good time and embracing the sport of disc golf in a Match Play Team environment. If you compete in NorCal or SoCal tournaments, you are earning points.  After the NorCal and SoCal Championships are wrapped up, the Team Captains (Michael Travers, NorCal and Mike Byrne, SoCal) send out invitations to the top points leaders in most divisions.  It is an honor to be invited to this event and an event I look forward to each year.

Day1

Day 1 results

The format is match play singles and doubles. Basically, 2 players from NorCal and 2 players from SoCal get paired up to battle for a potential 4 points per day. You play 18 holes of singles (1 NorCal vs 1 Socal) and immediately roll into doubles (both NorCal vs both SoCal players. Winning the singles will earn your team 1 point and winning doubles will earn 2 points for your team. In addition, a tie in singles earns 1/2 point for each team and a tie in doubles earns 1 point for each team.

Historically, NorCal has destroyed SoCal. This year, however, SoCal showed up ready to compete and win. We put in our work on Saturday and finished the day with a 4 point lead over NorCal. Saturday night we typically meet up at Atari-Ya for a great party and the best sushi around. It’s truly a great night but you must watch out for Mr. Lawrence Halili who has the huge bottle of saki going around! Sunday morning team captains have the option to shuffle teams and opponents, and redo the cards. On Sunday, NorCal beat SoCal by 1 point and SoCal won by 3 points overall!

Justin Lieberman and company put on a traditional Tri-Tip BBQ for the players on Sunday afternoon and we enjoyed the great food while discussing how we played and enjoyed great company while scores were being tallied.

It was truly an awesome moment when Travers picked up the “Bucket” and announced, “It’s Official” and proceeded to hand the bucket to SoCal team captain Mike Byrne. The SoCal team was excited and many pictures were taken to save the memories forever.

Waller Pines DGC and crew were great hosts and we thank them for all their work and efforts.

If you want to play next year, sign up for SoCal tournaments and start earning your points. We hope to see you out there next year helping SoCal defend out title!

Players Battle Severe Weather at the Skyhigh Showdown

Our thanks to Jon Ho for this story!

Many thanks go out to Suzette Simons for doing such an amazing job TDing the Sky High Showdown and keeping everyone safe, especially under such tough conditions!! Saturday, while being a little windy and overcast, went off without a hitch. Sunday, however, rained throughout the Pro round in the morning and the threat of a lightning storm loomed. The Pros finished up fine, though, thankfully. But during the Am round later in the day, it really began to pour. Suzette kept checking in the Mt. Lodge Staff to make sure that everyone would be safe, but when the lightning started to come in fast and heavy, she had to call everyone in. With nearly 100 people all stacked in the lodge, Suzette did her best to keep hope alive and keep all the Ams happy while we all waited to see if they could be sent back out to finish the round.

Unfortunately, after about an hour in the lodge, Sky High staff recommended that the tourney be called off, so Suzette had to make the announcement, much to everyone’s dismay. There were some great folks that jumped up and volunteered to get the raffle going while Suzette worked furiously to make sense of the numbers, saw what holes everyone in each division had played and could be counted in the final scores for the day. It was huge mess, but Suzette really pulled it all together in an amazing way!!

Big thanks also to all the gents that volunteered to run the raffle: Danny Behl, Jeremy Fairchild, Keith R. Wilson, and Jeff Nyerges!! And huge thanks to all the great folks that stuck around to help clean up the lodge: Mike Jewel, Tiara Cargile, Jeff Nyerges, and Chris Mattox!! I don’t think Suzette was able to head down the mountain until after 8:30pm, and that wouldn’t even been possible without the help of you great folks!! Thanks again to everyone (who helped), and apologies to anyone whose name I’ve missed here!!

Strong Showing by Southern California Disc Golfers at 2014 Am Worlds

Things are just getting back to normal on the disc golf courses around Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota after the hubbub of 612 disc golfers competing for the PDGA Amateur World Championships.  But a few Southern California disc golfers brought some of that excitement back home with them.

San Diego’s Vanessa Van Dyken kept her perfect PDGA tournament record alive at 7-0 by winning the Advanced Women’s division (FA1) at this year’s Am Worlds.  Vanessa took the lead after shooting the hot round (53) in the 3rd round and never looked back on her way to a 6-shot win.  Smashboxxtv was providing lots of live video coverage of the tournament play, and you can see their full round played at Bryant Lake here.

Santa Barbara’s Mark Hauser is a fixture in SoCal Disc Golf.  Mark has 38 PDGA wins since 2001, including seven (yes, seven!) Tim Selinske U.S. Masters titles in the Advanced Grandmaster division.  Mark had come in second twice, third and fifth at Am Worlds, but this year he took the title in Men’s Advanced Senior Grandmasters (MS1)!  After dueling with Florida’s Michael Schweitzer for the first three rounds, Mark took the lead in round #4 and cruised to a 19-shot victory.  Congrats Dr. Mark!

Perhaps the most buzz around SoCal last week was generated by the play of Robert “Robot” Smith of Fountain Valley, playing in the Advanced Men’s division (MA1).  Robot shot out of the gate quickly with a 1030-rated first round and held the lead after the first, second and third rounds.  He stumbled a little during the fourth round to drop into second place but quickly stormed back in the fifth round to regain the lead.  His cardmates picked up strokes on him in round six and the semi-finals as the top four players were all tied up going in to the 9-hole finals.  Robot stumbled on the first few holes of the final and ended up taking third place, but he was an obvious crowd favorite with his massive drives.  Several of Robot’s rounds are available for viewing on Smashboxxtv’s YouTube page.

Congrats to all of the SoCal disc golfers who made the trip to Minnesota, and thanks for representing us proudly!

SoCal Expands to Bakersfield!

At the SoCal member meeting held back in December at Prado Regional Park, many members expressed that they would like to see the SoCal Championships rotate to different locations.  You asked for it, you got it!2014 Champ logo

The 2014 SoCal Championships will be held November 8-9 (Ams) and November 15-16 (Pros) at Hart Park in Bakersfield, using both the mountain and flats courses.  Rocky Brown is merging his popular Sharktooth Open tournament with the SoCal Championships, sharing the TD duties with SoCal President Randy Wylot.  Registration will be available soon on DGU and a flyer is available for download here.

The plan for future years is to rotate the championship tournaments between different locations in SoCal, such as Santa Maria, Lake Casitas, La Mirada and north San Diego.  Doing this will require the assistance of TDs and volunteers at these locations, so be ready to help when the SoCal Championships are in your backyard!

The SoCal Championships at Hart Park will top off a SoCal Series that has seen it’s greatest number of events ever, with new tournament locations and new TDs joining the SoCal Series.  See you in Bako!\

Recent update (7/28/2014) from Rocky Brown: “Host hotel is the Marriott on Truxtun avenue. I am negotiating rooms at $69 they are very nice rooms and about as close as you can get to the course in a hotel.
