August Points Update

Jeff Nichols has been at his abacus, and the SoCal Series Points for August have been posted. Gavin Bos and Sheliemae Lai maintain strangleholds on the Open Division Races, but things are coming down to the wire everywhere else. Just four points separate Stewart Mendenhall from Mike Bloomfield in MP40, and Chris Brophy from Jay Bowman in MP50. Michael Ortiz and Justin Martinez are TIED in MA40, and Randall Cook has Brandon Fantasia by only 7 points in MA2. Rito Ocampo and Jonathan Reaser are 3 points apart in MA3. It is shaping up to be one of the most exciting finishes in the history of the SoCal Series. Sign up for one of our fall events and get in the race.

Don’t forget: in addition to divisional titles, SoCal series points determine some automatic qualifying spots for the T. Ske CA Cup, plus SoCal’s new awards for the Nichols Cup (most total points) and SoCal’s Iron Golfer. It looks to me like Hailey Fitzgerald and Randall Cook hold narrow leads in that final category… but things are far from over!

April Points Posted!

Check them out on the standings page. There’s still time left to make a move for the series title in your division. Although if you are one of the unlucky men chasing Chris Brophy this year, I suggest you get on your horse immediately!

Summer is coming!

A bevy of summer events are now open for registration!

1st– ATTENTION ALL PLAYERS UNDER 18 YEARS OF AGE! There is an upcoming qualifier for the Future of Disc Golf program at Mark Verrochi’s private course. Top performers can earn travel assistance to compete at Maple Hill, and then on to Europe for a 5-night “summer camp” training opportunity with Avery Jenkins and Eric Oakley. It’s important to note this competition is NOT limited to amateur players. We’ve got a lot of teenage pros in SoCal with the skills to win this series!

2nd– we have two events joining the SoCal series in their inaugural running. The Soarin Open (6/28-6-29) and the Yucaipa Summer Slam (7/20) are now open for sign ups, and both promise to be great events.

3rd– there are two Josh Cheney / Nate Weaver collabs on the calendar with slots available. These guys are some of our most dedicated SoCal TDs, running tons of family-friendly one-day events with bargain entry fees. Please support the Speakeasy Shootout (5/24) and the Mountain Meltdown Am Day (5/31) and Pro Day (6/1).

March Points Updates

Thanks to tabulator-in-chief Jeff Nichols, we have updated series standings through the end of March.

Shoutouts! Patrick Womack leads MPO after securing his first ever MPO win at the Cowtown Throwdown. Randall Cook looks like an early contender for SoCal’s Iron Golfer, with 8 events played, and Jared Warner is close behind with 7. Hae Jung Cho is tearing it up out there, leading FA50, and threatening for both Iron Golfer and the Nichols Cup on the women’s side. There are tons more fierce battles, including an unpredictable race at the top of MA1, and a nail-biter between Paul Rudd and Oz Tuaila in MA60.

New Events and Schedule Changes!!

Competition is heating up on the 2025 SoCal Series, which is promising more tournaments than ever before. Stay apprised of the latest by checking our schedule and following our accounts on Facebook and Instagram. Here’s a roundup of some of the latest breaking news.

SECOND, The Santa Maria Open announces a date change. All competitors will now be hosted on 8/2-8/3. This resolves a conflict with The Challenge at Reidy Creek, which means intrepid SoCalers can now play both!!

THIRD, AND ALWAYS– registration is open for a half-dozen plus fantastic upcoming tournaments. Please check out our calendar for links to the Bert Cotton Memorial, the Cachuma Classic, the El Dorado Open, and the Sapwi Spring Classic. AND THAT’S JUST APRIL!!!

Announcing Two New Season-Long Awards!

Since its inception in 1996, the So Cal Disc Golf club has recognized series points champions in both amateur and professional divisions.

Today, we are excited to announce the instatement of two brand new season-long awards:

The Nichols Cup will be awarded to one male and one female club member who accrue the most total series points throughout the year, across all amateur, professional, age-protected, and gender-protected divisions, without regard to the traditional “7-best-events cap.” The award is named in honor of our long-time volunteer statistician Jeff Nichols.

SoCal’s Iron Golfer will be awarded to one male and one female club member who compete in the most So Cal Series events throughout the season. Last year Ronnie Bloomfield, aka Mike Coleman, aka Tony Stark, played a staggering 18 series events. Let’s see if anyone can top him in 2025.

BTW, the February tabulation of series points has been posted here. As always, please email Jeff Nichols or a member of SoCal’s BOD if you notice a possible error.
