April Points Posted!

Check them out on the standings page. There’s still time left to make a move for the series title in your division. Although if you are one of the unlucky men chasing Chris Brophy this year, I suggest you get on your horse immediately!

Summer is coming!

A bevy of summer events are now open for registration!

1st– ATTENTION ALL PLAYERS UNDER 18 YEARS OF AGE! There is an upcoming qualifier for the Future of Disc Golf program at Mark Verrochi’s private course. Top performers can earn travel assistance to compete at Maple Hill, and then on to Europe for a 5-night “summer camp” training opportunity with Avery Jenkins and Eric Oakley. It’s important to note this competition is NOT limited to amateur players. We’ve got a lot of teenage pros in SoCal with the skills to win this series!

2nd– we have two events joining the SoCal series in their inaugural running. The Soarin Open (6/28-6-29) and the Yucaipa Summer Slam (7/20) are now open for sign ups, and both promise to be great events.

3rd– there are two Josh Cheney / Nate Weaver collabs on the calendar with slots available. These guys are some of our most dedicated SoCal TDs, running tons of family-friendly one-day events with bargain entry fees. Please support the Speakeasy Shootout (5/24) and the Mountain Meltdown Am Day (5/31) and Pro Day (6/1).

March Points Updates

Thanks to tabulator-in-chief Jeff Nichols, we have updated series standings through the end of March.

Shoutouts! Patrick Womack leads MPO after securing his first ever MPO win at the Cowtown Throwdown. Randall Cook looks like an early contender for SoCal’s Iron Golfer, with 8 events played, and Jared Warner is close behind with 7. Hae Jung Cho is tearing it up out there, leading FA50, and threatening for both Iron Golfer and the Nichols Cup on the women’s side. There are tons more fierce battles, including an unpredictable race at the top of MA1, and a nail-biter between Paul Rudd and Oz Tuaila in MA60.

New Events and Schedule Changes!!

Competition is heating up on the 2025 SoCal Series, which is promising more tournaments than ever before. Stay apprised of the latest by checking our schedule and following our accounts on Facebook and Instagram. Here’s a roundup of some of the latest breaking news.

FIRST UP, A NEW EVENT ON THE CALENDAR! Registration for the 1-round C-Tier, Friday Night Lights, opens tonight!!!

SECOND, The Santa Maria Open announces a date change. All competitors will now be hosted on 8/2-8/3. This resolves a conflict with The Challenge at Reidy Creek, which means intrepid SoCalers can now play both!!

THIRD, AND ALWAYS– registration is open for a half-dozen plus fantastic upcoming tournaments. Please check out our calendar for links to the Bert Cotton Memorial, the Cachuma Classic, the El Dorado Open, and the Sapwi Spring Classic. AND THAT’S JUST APRIL!!!

Announcing Two New Season-Long Awards!

Since its inception in 1996, the So Cal Disc Golf club has recognized series points champions in both amateur and professional divisions.

Today, we are excited to announce the instatement of two brand new season-long awards:

The Nichols Cup will be awarded to one male and one female club member who accrue the most total series points throughout the year, across all amateur, professional, age-protected, and gender-protected divisions, without regard to the traditional “7-best-events cap.” The award is named in honor of our long-time volunteer statistician Jeff Nichols.

SoCal’s Iron Golfer will be awarded to one male and one female club member who compete in the most So Cal Series events throughout the season. Last year Ronnie Bloomfield, aka Mike Coleman, aka Tony Stark, played a staggering 18 series events. Let’s see if anyone can top him in 2025.

BTW, the February tabulation of series points has been posted here. As always, please email Jeff Nichols or a member of SoCal’s BOD if you notice a possible error.

Registration Open for Many Spring Events

Competition is heating up with a bevy of spring events across the Southland. Secure your spot in these events ASAP!

The Yucaipa Open is a 3-day B-tier with on-site camping. TD George Loepke is among the best in the business, and he has promised a minimum of $1000 added cash. Wowza. Join us Mar 7-9.

The weekend of March 15, there are spots available in both The Cowtown Open and The Surf City Open! Is it tragic you can’t play both? Yes it is. But trust me when I say you can’t go wrong. Josh and Nate provide a fun single day event up at Prado with immaculate vibes, and let you spend Sunday at home with your family. Or hit Huntington Beach, where WCDGC turns up the challenge and attracts elite players. Win a title on the patch of dirt that birthed Paul McBeth!

The Ice Bowl in Paradise is a charity event with a great historic tradition. TD Shawn Glassford has put in the blood and sweat to transform Chavez Ridge into a beautiful and challenging track. Expect new pin positions and tee pads!

Daniel Boe is stuffed to the gills (no surprise with Mark Verocchi at the helm), but there is plenty of other golf to be had in April.

Registration is open for the Bert Cotton Memorial at Palm Royale Country Club. If you haven’t been out to this event, check out the photos from last year and tell me this isn’t the most manicured disc golf course you’ve ever seen.

Early/sponsorship registration is open for the illustrious Cachuma Classic, a 4(!!!!) round event on the permanent and Mohawk Courses. TD Mike Roberts and the Cachuma DGC put on a great show including free BBQ on Saturday night.

Long Beach is back on the calendar with the El Dorado Open, and registration opens tonight! ElDo was the first PDGA event I played in SoCal when I moved here in 2009, and it rained cats and dogs. Lets see if TD Eric Conmy can guarantee better weather. 🙂

1st Points Update for 2025!

⏰ It’s time for the first SoCal Series Points update of 2025, including the “wrap around season” events at the end of 2024. 📈 Click here to check them out!

IMPORTANT: Only current SoCal Disc Golf Club members receive series points. If you have played in a SoCal Series event, but have not renewed, we have extended the grace period to Friday 2/7. If you do not renew by then, any previous results will not be counted toward your season total!

and… REMEMBER! Points guru Jeff Nichols is not on social media. So if you spot an error, please email him and we will correct!

SoCal 4-Peats at Tim Selinske CA Cup!

Last weekend Team SoCal achieved a historic fourth consecutive victory in the Tim Selinske CA Cup (NorCal vs. SoCal Invitational Team Disc Golf Tournament)!!!

Our thanks go out to Mike Byrne, Michael Travers, Wayne VanPatten Jr., Kristine King, Lawrence Halili, and the Santa Maria DG community, for keeping this 3-decade tradition rolling. And of course to Innova Discs , honoring the memory of Tim Selinske.

Final Score: SoCal 82.5 / NorCal 77.5

Check out the video highlights on our Instagram page!

If you are interested in participating in this unique event next year, stay tuned, I’ll be adding detailed qualification criteria to the website soon. But the short version is: 1) join SoCal for 2025, 2) win the points title in your division or place as highly as possible, and 3) inform Mike Byrne via email that you are available for consideration!

Wintertime Open – Last Chance!

It is only two weeks (!!!) until the 2025 SoCal Series begins in earnest with the 47th Wintertime Open. Is there anything cooler than claiming a title in the park where our sport became a sport?

Registration remains open for both the Am and Pro weekends– check it out!
